New zero halogen flame retardant technology for engineering polymers

 

To comply with REACH legislation, which has resulted in the restricted use of brominated flame retardants, Delamin has developed a range of nitrogen flame retardants for use in the Plastics Industry.

Engineering Polymers

engineering polymersEngineering polymers have exceptional mechanical properties that make them useful in structural products. These include electronic, mechanical, and automotive components. These polymers have high compounding temperatures. When incorporating additives such as zero halogen flame retardants into compounds with engineering polymers, thermal stability is necessary.

FR Compounds

FR compoundsHalogen Free Flame Retardant compounds (HFFR), Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSOH) and Low Smoke Fume (LSF) are terms used to identify a group of flame retardant plastic compounds.

Following the banning of several PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers), the use of these compounds is increasing in cable, flooring and foam applications. Melamine derived nitrogen flame retadants are used in these compounds.

PVC Membranes

PVC membraneMembrane roofings and tanking are mostly used in commercial applications but are becoming increasingly common in residential applications. PVC membrane gain their advantage from 'lap' seams. Abrasion and chemically resistant additives such as Cenospheres are ideal for reducing weight in these membrane types.

UPR Pultrusion

UPR pultrusionContinuous extrusion profiles are commonly used in applications such a UPV window frames. The addition of Cenospheres is beneficial for weight reduction and also imparts important weather resistant properties.

Zero Halogen NFRs

fire retardant nitrateNitrogen Flame Retardants (NFR) are a group of compounds which are becoming the focus of interest due to their environmentally friendly nature. Predominantly melamine derived, these NFRs offer low toxicity with the absence of dioxin and halogen acids. Low smoke evolution is another positive characteristic. These additives are highly efficient when compared to the lower activity of metal oxide flame retardants. Therefore, low addition levels are required resulting in these nitorgen flame retardants having less impact on the mechnical properties of the compound.

DELASPHERES™

Delaspheres™(Cenospheres) are small, high strength, extremely lightweight, free flowing, non porous, hollow ceramic spheres. Cenospheres are used primarily as lightweight fillers in the oil and gas, plastics, building, refractories, automotive, aerospace and surface coating industries. Delaspheres™ are available in both grey and white to suit the intended application.

DELFLAM™

latestDelflam™ is a range of zero halogen nitrogen flame retardant synergists manufactured from melamine resulting in homologues having higher thermal stability compared to pure melamine, melamine cyanurate and melamine polyphosphate. It is non-toxic and non-corrosive.

Delflam™ is the latest development in our Nitrogen Flame Retardant programme and has now replaced the Delacal™ range. Delflam™ consists mainly of melem with a minor proportion of melam.
